Get Back | Tomorrow Never Knows

GoF Movie...

...did NOT completely suck. Wonderment! Joy! Er...competence! The effects were, of course, just unbelievable; the World Cup aerial view literally took my breath away. And the Dark Mark = squee! I also thought Voldie's snake nose was spot-on...and did you LOVE the way the Death Eaters were sort of sucked out of the sky when he called them? So cool (though it kinda made me wonder, "How the hell did Snape resist THAT for two hours?")

That said, some things rankled, as they always do. "Not nearly enough Snape" is always at the top of my list (of course), but especially here. No Dark Mark revelation? No little speech? (Sucks, too, 'cos Alan Rickman was born to utter the line, "He has returned.") And could the fact that Snape was once a Death Eater (and a spy for the Order) have been any more of an afterthought? Both Karkaroff's charge and Dumbledore's rebuttal seemed sort of tossed into the scene - you could barely hear what they were saying, Karkaroff was talking over Dumbledore's reply, and the pace and timing gave the audience no time to react. Not the real audience (us), nor the one in the courtroom.

(Nor did we get a reaction from Harry. Nothing! This is like finding out your teacher was once a member of the Manson Family (or maybe Al Queda), and Harry doesn't bat an eye? Doesn't ask Dumbledore about it? Doesn't even mention it in passing to Ron or Hermione? WTF?)

Other WTF moments:

Dumbledore's flip-out on Harry. God, do I miss Richard Harris in this role. God, do I despise Michael Gambon in this role! I'd like to take that stupid goddamned beard scrunchie of his and strangle him with it. Really. Just strangle him blue and cold and dead.

Dumbledore's GREAT BIG SMOOSHY HUG with Karkaroff. This was WTF? to the nth degree.

Barty Crouch, Jr. saying Voldemort's name. This is a biggie for the die-hard canonista. And how the hell did that get past Rowling?

Minor quibbles:

Fleur just wasn't that beautiful. I mean, she was attractive, but not heart-stoppingly gorgeous as described. Cedric was much prettier...a bit too pretty for my tastes, but oh, well. Viktor was surprisingly sexy (and I hope little Hermione shagged the shit out of him). Karkaroff was not bad (except for those teeth) but much too young…he is not supposed to be younger than Snape. And, er…no Narcissa? Gonna be a bit confusing for non-bookers when she shows up at Snape’s door at the beginning of Half-Blood Prince: The Movie and they go, “So who the hell is this silly bitch?”

I’m on the fence about Brendon Gleeson’s Moody. Leaning toward “didn’t like,” but I need to see it again before I decide.

Really Nice Surprises::

The kids! Well, the boys. They were both pretty good in this movie. Radcliffe, especially, has shown a dramatic improvement - I think he handled the scene over Cedric’s body beautifully. I didn’t think he had it in him. (For some reason, I think Emma Watson, who had been the best of the three IMO, took a bit of a step backward.)

Miranda Richardson. Just…just perfect. In every single way. Nailed Rita Skeeter, and stole every moment she had on screen.

Tom Felton. Oh, my. The little pureblood brat should wear Muggle threads more often. He looked gorgeous in that suit. I don’t like blonds and I don’t like babies, and I have never found him even remotely attractive before, but…wow. The Felton fangirls are going to squee themselves hoarse.

Favorite Moment::

What else? Snape bitch-slapping the dynamic duo, natch. The timing. The slight look heavenward. The sleeves! Perfect, just perfect.

Thank you so much for the rec! I wondered why I was getting a sudden rush of new reviews after a long period of nothing. This is a wonderful surprise - like finding an extra Christmas present tucked away in the back of the closet. Made my day!
